Long Island is experiencing some severe weather this afternoon, with storms producing winds of over 50 mph and golf ball size hail, the National Weather Service said.
Both Nassau and Suffolk counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10 p.m. this evening. The NWS reported a severe thunderstorm near Great Neck and Lake Success at around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Hail that was up to one inch in diameter was also reported in New Hyde Park.

Meteorologists said that winds with gusts up to 50 mph can be expected with the storm, along with torrential rain.
A flash flood warning is also in effect for Nassau County until 6 p.m, with special emphasis along the Nassau/Queens border near Lake Success.
The weather has caused major commuting problems on the Long Island Rail Road. As of 5 p.m. LIRR service was temporarily suspended on the Ronkonkoma, Huntington/Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay and Hempstead Branches. The Babylon and Montauk Branches have limited service, and the Port Washington Branch has delays. For those traveling westbound, service between Jamaica and Penn is temporarily suspended. The MTA website states that: “Customers will be accommodated by NYC Transit which is cross honoring LIRR fares for westbound customers only.”
