Steven Kinalis, 30, was driving eastbound on Sunrise Highway in Shirley when detectives say he rear-ended a pickup truck. This caused the truck to leave the roadway and strike a tree.

The 5-year-old son of driver Kevin Gaffney was critically injured and airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center. Gaffney, 36, of West Islip, his wife and their 7-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were also taken to Stony Brook where they were all treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Kinalis refused medical treatment after the crash, and detectives arrested and charged him with driving while ability impaired by drugs. He will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
