5 Waldbaum’s, 1 Pathmark to Close on Long Island

Five Waldbaum’s and a Pathmark on Long Island have been slated for closure while the supermarket chains’ parent company is in bankruptcy court.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. announced Monday that it has filed a motion in Manhattan federal court to close more than a dozen stores in four states. Among those are one in Nassau County and five in Suffolk, according to Supermartket News.

“As part of our preparations to emerge from Chapter 11, we have decided to close these 14 underperforming locations,” Sam Martin, CEO of A&P, said in a statement. “While this was a very difficult decision that will unfortunately impact some of our customers, partners, associates and the surrounding communities, these actions are absolutely necessary.”

The five Waldbaum’s on the chopping block are in Rockville Centre, Huntington Station, Commack, West Babylon and Lake Ronkonkoma. The Pathmark is in East Islip. Pending court approval, the stores would be closed by March.

Montvale, N.J.-based A&P has four other supermarket chains with 336 stores in six states besides its flagship, Pathmark and Waldbaum’s. The company employs about 36,000 workers.

It reportedly closed or sold 60 stores last year.
