3 Officers Save Man from Drug OD in Brentwood

A man suffering a drug overdose behind the wheel of his parked, running vehicle was saved by three off-duty Suffolk County police officers who had just finished recertification training in advanced cardiac life support in Brentwood on Thursday night.

Police said the Medical Crisis Action Team officers were walking out the Applebees restaurant on Motor Parkway after a full day of training at the nearby police academy when they noticed white smoke coming from a Mazda at 7:30 p.m.

The trio went to investigate and found a 23-year-old unconscious man slumped over the steering wheel and barely breathing.

The officers notified 911 and immediately began efforts to resuscitate the victim using a defibrillator. The man began breathing on his own about 5 minutes later and was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown for observation.

Police did not say what drugs were involved.

Patrol officers responded to the scene and impounded the vehicle.
