A 56-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing Sunrise Highway near her Merrick home on Wednesday morning.
Nassau County police said Susan Reffke was crossing the highway at the corner of Hewlett Avenue when she was hit by a westbound Toyota in the right lane at 6:25 a.m.
The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased two and a half hours later.

The vehicle was impounded for safety checks.
First Squad detectives found no apparent criminality involved in the crash.
