Man Sentenced for Fatal LI Drugged-driving Crash


A Glen Cove man was sentenced to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison for driving while high on a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol when he caused a crash that killed a 19-year-old motorcyclist two years ago.

Juan Uribe had been convicted at Nassau County court last October of vehicular manslaughter, driving while ability impaired by a combination of drugs and alcohol, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.

Prosecutors said the 37-year-old man was driving his Nissan SUV northbound on Glen Cove Road when he crashed into a tree at the corner of Midwood Cross in East Hills on May 1, 2010.

A taxi and a motorcycle then crashed into Uribe’s SUV. Pietro Gaudesi of Glen Head was thrown from his motorcyclist and pronounced dead at the scene.

Uribe, the taxi driver and one his passengers suffered minor injuries.

Uribe had prescription muscle relaxers, anti-depressants, and painkillers in his system at the time of the crash, as well as a blood-alcohol content of .02 percent two hours after the crash, authorities said.
