Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the county’s term limit law.

The county’s sheriff and clerk joined the Democrat in the suit.

They claim the 1993 law restricting the county’s elected officials to a maximum of 12 years in office cannot apply to them.

They say they’re “quasi-state officers” whose jobs and terms cannot be altered or limited by local law.

According to Newsday, the suit doesn’t challenge term limits for other countywide elected officials, including the county executive, treasurer and comptroller.

Spota’s three-term limit ends in 2013.

Suffolk’s Democratic Chairman Richard Schaffer said he supports the suit.

Suffolk GOP Chairman John Jay LaValle said he supports term limits. He says the lawsuit is a matter for the courts.
