UPDATE: LIE reopened while the investigation continues

Suffolk County authorities have closed the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood after a man was seriously injured in the roadway on Friday morning.

The victim was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment after the call came in shortly before 11 a.m.

A spokesman for the county sheriff’s department could not immediately confirm initial reports that the man had jumped from an overpass onto the expressway near exit 55, Route 111.

The westbound lanes were closed between that exit and exit 53 for the Sagtikos Parkway while investigators are on the scene.

A man had jumped from a bridge in the same area less than a year ago.
