Heavy rains forecast for Long Island this weekend will break a dry streak that reportedly contributed to brush fires this week, but the rainfall may cause flooding in some areas, forecasters said.
Showers are expected to start Friday afternoon followed by 2 to 4 inches of rain Saturday evening into Sunday and Monday, according to Upton-based National Weather Service meteorologists.
“The heaviest rainfall is expected from Saturday night into Sunday morning,” the agency said in a statement. “Given that the region has been very dry of late…the most likely result from this rainfall is urban flooding of poor drainage and low lying areas. However… there is a small chance that there could be more significant and/or more widespread flooding from Saturday night into Sunday.”
The rain is expected to roll in as the latest cold spell ends and more seasonable temperatures settle in, with Friday breezy in the 50s, Saturday and Sunday in the 40s.
Once the weather clears up, temps are expected to be in the 50s next week and may hit a high of 61 Wednesday, although it will still drop down to the 30s at night.
