Patchogue Man Critical in Hit-and-run Crash

A hit-and-run driver critically injured a 24-year-old man who was crossing a road in his hometown of Patchogue early Sunday morning, Suffolk County police said.

Walter Orlando Matute Penaranda was crossing Montauk Highway east of Bay Avenue when he was struck by a westbound vehicle that fled the scene at 4:20 a.m., police said.

Penaranda was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition.

The suspect’s vehicle was described as a gray or silver two-door sedan with a rear spoiler, possibly an older model Honda, police said. Witnesses told police that there were other vehicles with occupants that may have witnessed to the crash.
