Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Port Jefferson, Cops Say

A 48-year-old homeless man was killed Monday night in Port Jefferson when a car struck him as he was crossing Route 25A, Suffolk County police said.

Paul Kearins, who police said was homeless and would occasionally stay in a shelter in Port Jefferson, was crossing Route 25A while pushing a shopping cart at 6:25 p.m. when he was struck by a 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser heading south on Dayton Avenue, police said. The vehicle struck the shopping cart, which then struck Kearins, police said.

He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The 60-year-old driver of the car was not injured. No charges were filed.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing, police said.
