Shirley Man Sentenced for Fatal DWI Crash

A Shirley man was sentenced Wednesday to 1 ⅓ to 4 years in prison for driving drunk and causing a crash that killed his 29-year-old passenger in the victim’s hometown of Brentwood last year.

Oscar Rivera pleaded guilty last month at Suffolk County Court to second-degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and driving without a license.

Prosecutors said the 27-year-old man was drunk when he was driving his Lincoln southbound on Grand Boulevard, where he lost control of the car and hit a tree on the morning of Oct. 4, 2014.

His passenger, David Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

Judge Fernando Camacho handed down the sentence after prosecutors requested Rivera get 2 to 6 years in prison.
