Smithtown Doc Swapped Sex for Rx, Feds Say

A doctor from Smithtown has been arrested for allegedly prescribing painkillers to drug addicts, in some cases in exchange for sexual favors from female patients over a four-year span, federal authorities said.

Dr. Mitchel Fagin was charged Friday with illegally distributing controlled substances to patients without a legitimate medical need.

“Dr. Fagin’s house was a medicine chest for opioid addicts to fuel their addiction,” said James Hunt, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York office.

Authorities said the 63-year-old pain-management doctor wrote prescriptions for highly addictive drugs such as oxycodone, methodone and alprazalom, giving the drugs to substance abusers from May 2010 to September 2014.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at Central Islip federal court before Judge Joanna Seybert.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
