After about a week of speculation, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) accepted the job offer of Secretary of State in the administration of President-Elect Barack Obama.
Speculation into whether or not Clinton would take the most high-profile cabinet level appointment surfaced last week when she flew to Chicago to meet with Obama to discuss the offer. The job offer also came with a rigorous vetting process, that included a look at the financial ties and any potential conflicts of interest on the part of her husband, former president Bill Clinton.
Now that Clinton has accepted the offer, she is on track to be officially nominated in an announcement that is reported to come after Thanksgiving. The former Obama rival will now be fourth in line for the presidency and the third woman to hold the title of secretary of state.
New York State Gov. David Paterson, who will have to appoint a replacement when Clinton puts in her resignation, has been coyly avoiding the topic of who he is considering.
