The victim was identified as a 29-year-old Huntington Station man.

A 29-year-old Huntington Station man died after his SUV skidded off of a wet roadway and plunged into Huntington Harbor on Saturday evening.

Suffolk County police said Edward Franz was driving a Chevrolet Suburban southbound on West Shore Road in Huntington, when he lost control of the SUV on a curve, struck a guardrail, went airborne, rolled over and landed upside down in six feet of water at 5:25 p.m.

Four good Samaritans jumped into the water, used a rock to break a window and rescued the passenger, Liam O’Mara, 20, of Huntington. Officers and Huntington Fire Department firefighters pulled Franz from the vehicle before he was taken to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Four of the officers and two of the good Samaritans were treated and released at the same hospital.

Second Squad detectives are continuing the investigation.

Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove and Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station were both partially evacuated Monday afternoon.

Two Long Island malls were partially evacuated Monday afternoon following a gas leak at one and a leaky roof at another.

Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove closed its Lifestyle Wing, which includes Payless, Starbucks and Sephora before the rest of the mall was closed by the Fire Marshall at about 4 p.m., according to a spokeswoman for the Simon-operated mall. She also said local media reports of a partial collapse of the mall’s roof were not true.

New York & Co. suffered the worst water damage. It’s unclear what time the mall will reopen Tuesday.

Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station, which is also run by Indiana-based Simon, was partially evacuated as well after workers at a nearby construction site mistakenly ruptured a natural gas line, according to a Suffolk County police spokeswoman.

An alleged drunken driver was arrested for nearly running over two Nassau County police officers while the suspect was speeding the wrong way on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow over the weekend, authorities said.

Tomas Menjivar drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 24 near Merrick Avenue when he almost hit the cops who were investigating a prior crash at 6:20 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The officers jumped out of the way of the 25-year-old Huntington Station man’s Dodge, police said. Menjivar was stopped and found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Menjivar was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
