With Long Island largely out of the storm's path, predictions of wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour did not materialize. Instead, Long Islanders were greeted by 50 mph gusts on the East End and lesser gusts in Nassau County on Tuesday.
Although Hermine is currently is moving across Florida and into Georgia, Long Island is still in store for strong rip currents and high surf through the weekend. Both Nassau and Suffolk counties could experience strong winds late Saturday and then possible coastal flooding Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The arctic blast will hang over the Island on Sunday—meaning Valentine’s Day revelers will have to bundle up to enjoy the festivities. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to hit the teens but won’t go much higher than that, the weather service said.
Anyone have a blanket we can borrow?
Forecasters say a winter storm is likely this weekend, although that could change in the coming days.
The weather service issued a winter storm warning for both Nassau and Suffolk counties until 7 p.m. Thursday.
