A Freeport man has been convicted of a two-month burglary spree in which he stole cell phones, wallets, a laptop computer and an emergency vehicle from an East Meadow doctor’s office.

A Nassau County jury found Emania Shepard guilty this week of burglary, grand larceny and petit larceny. He was acquitted of unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Prosecutors said the 51-year-old man stole from an apartment and six businesses between December 2011 and January 2012.

He stole a laptop computer from a Jericho gym on Dec. 17, 2011, and a wallet and a set of car keys from a Baldwin music store six days later.

He stole jewelry from a Rockville Centre apartment on Jan. 9, 2012. Two days later, he stole an East Meadow pediatrician’s keys, then used the keys to steal the doctor’s Jeep equipped with lights and sirens. Police recovered the vehicle four days later.

Shepard also stole keys from a Lynbrook brokerage agency and using the keys to steal items from an employee’s car on Jan. 31, 2012 before walking into a nearby clothing store and stealing three hats.

The crime spree ended shortly later when Shepard was caught trying to steal a cell phone from a nearby music store. Lynbrook village police officers brought Shepard to the Nassau County Police Department’s Fifth Precinct, where detective investigating the burglaries recognized him.

Shepard faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced April 17.

(Long Island Press)

An elderly man and woman married 20 years were both found dead Thursday morning inside their Lynbrook home, Nassau County police said.

“At this time it appears to be a natural cause death and a suicide,” Nassau County police spokesman Det. Vincent Garcia told reporters at the scene.

Police did not immediately release their names.

The 73-year-old woman is believed to have died of natural causes, pending autopsy results, police said. It appears that her 70-year-old husband died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a shotgun.

The couple was discovered after a home health care aid arrived at the house but was unable to get inside the locked door, Garcia said. The health care aid called the family and someone came by with a key to open the door when the discovery was made and a witness called 911 shortly before 10 a.m., police said.

The woman was found on a bed, police said, and her husband’s body was discovered nearby.

Officials said Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice and an employee were at the scene. A spokesman for Rice’s office said the incident involved a relative of an employee of the district attorney’s office.
