Four days of independent music

Long Island-based band and this year’s Break Contest winners Bears & Motorcycles head to the East End this weekend for The Montauk Music Festival, a four day musical celebration featuring talented up-and-coming independent artists.

Forged in the summer of 2012, Long Island’s Bears & Motorcycles began with three members: Dillon Mealey, Jeff Alvarado, and Brendan McGrath. The trio started writing raw, unpolished blues-rock in the backyard of a long island suburb in the heat of that summer. What soon would develop into heart wrenching anthems and fiery hooks had begun to take shape.

Within a few months two new members were added to complete the lineup. Professionally trained jazz/blues keys player Will Mahlan and the promising young drummer Jonathan Brick. With sounds drawing from the influences of the acid-washed, blues driven rock of the ’60s and ’70s and the catchy fervor of newer band from the 2000s and beyond this sound is something you can’t quite put your finger on.

Bears and Motorcycles won The Break Contest two weeks ago at the Encore Event Center in New Jersey and GameChanger is featuring the band’s music in a video game that will be released in early 2014.

More than 100 artists boasting a wide variety of musical styles (from alternative, rock, folk, pop, Americana, reggae, blues, jazz, bluegrass, to flamenco, rap, hip-hop, country, metal, and more), will be performing for free in the spirit of sharing original music with audiences and fellow musicians at this weekend’s event.

In its third year of production, the festival has cultivated an atmosphere of goodwill promoting local charities, connecting local New York “island” musicians with those from as far away as Vermont and California. Music lovers and performers alike are drawn to the beautiful oceanside playground of Montauk to promote and share art.

It's just the sweetest lil' thang you gon' hear all day, I do declare

Do you watch Nashville?

Amanda does. But I don’t. It’s not anything against country music. I never watched Dallas either. Never saw Chicago. Vegas either.

According to Amanda, Paris was a TV show in the ’70s, but I don’t trust anyone who watches Nashville.

Anyway, on the show, there are apparently singing sisters who play singing sisters (Lennon and Maisy Stella, which doesn’t sound down-Southy-AT-ALL). Both are young, but one is super young. They are quite capable at singing.

There is something of a wildly popular song floating around the universe by a band called The Lumineers. It’s called “Ho Hey.” (Not to be confused with “Hey Ho,” which is a phrase I am ashamed to say I’ve used once or twenty times in my day.)

The Nashville singing sister girls covered “Ho Hey” at the legendary Grand Ole Opry.

They rocked it. (Or countried it, as the case may be.)

Check it out.

Brushy One String does more with one string sitting on a humble stoop than most do with many strings and million dollar recording studios.

Jamaican music is not for everybody.

Sure, everybody likes the smooth roots reggae styles, most people, stoners and non-stoners alike, can vibe along to Marley’s music (Bob, not Owen Wilson’s dog that dies. Spoiler alert. Wait, did I do that backwards? Anyway…)

Some adventurous (white) people can even get down to a bit of dancehall reggae (though you should NOT try daggering. Trust me. In fact, don’t even Google it. NO! DON’T!!! Ugh. You did, didn’t you? I told you not to.)

Anyway anyway, there is a movie, Rise Up, which documents Jamaica’s underground music scene. It seems fascinating, and I’m sure it is. It won all kinds of those awards with the leaves that movies get at festivals and such but nobody ever knows about them even when they get nominated for an Oscar like Beasts of The Southern Wild.

In it, apparently, there is an artist known as Brushy One String. Brushy One String and his one string make an enjoyable bluesy-reggae-fun mix of music that is vastly more entertaining than much of the music that comes from places with 80,000,000 times more technology (and strings) than Brushy One String has here.

For that, he has satisfied my need to buzz.

So, widdout furder adoo, ere is Brushy One Strung. Ee’s a greet mewsick maykah an yah gunnuh love wahee do. (To be read with a Jamaican accent).

“Drinking before work?” asked Sal.

Hardy har har.

Yes, Sal. But that’s not why it’s so fantastic.

Now, normally, I get very angry when people skip my write-ups on these here Buzz entries, as frankly, my unearthly ability to entertain is a gift that cannot be paralleled.

But in this case, go ahead, as the gift I give to all pales in comparison to the one the great, iconic, Long Island treasure/deity Billy Joel himself bestowed unto young Michael Pollack.

Pollack, a student at Vanderbilt University, was in the audience at a January event with Joel titled “An Evening of Questions and Answers and a Little Bit of Music.”

In one shining moment, all three happened.

Pollack asked a question, Joel gave an answer and then there was a little bit o’ music.

As they say in the ‘hood, and in the chicken nursery, peep it.

Now in its fifth year, Northside Festival highlights “what’s next” in music, film, and entrepreneurship.

The festival will also play host to the first NYC performance in 26 years of Greg Ginn’s iconic band Black Flag, featuring Jealous Again-era vocalist Ron Reyes. An additional taste of what’s to come includes Swans, Lambchop, Iceage, Son Volt, Rhys Chatham and Oneida (special collaboration), WHY?, Merchandise, Chelsea Wolfe, Twin Sister, The Soft Moon, Milk Music, Kisses, Lower, Destruction Unit, Good for You, Greg Ginn & the Royal We and many more. (Scroll down for full lineup)

Northside Music, June 13-16, will showcase nearly 350 bands creating what’s next in music. For the first time ever during Northside, the two McCarren Park concerts, on Saturday and Sunday, will be free! In addition to the 6,000-capacity McCarren Park space, there will be free music programming Saturday afternoon during Williamsburg Walks in the neighborhood epicenter, Bedford Avenue. All day Bedford Ave. will be closed off to car traffic from Metropolitan Ave. to McCarren Park and transformed into a public space with art, live music, food, and more.

The festival kicks off with NExT: The Northside Entrepreneurship and Technology Expo. NExT has two major programs: a free, public innovation expo in McCarren Park, Brooklyn, to showcase NYC’s innovation community, and an entrepreneurship conference that takes place at a handful of venues in walking distance from the park.

In addition to more than 100 booths and presentations, NExT at McCarren Park will include the following:

The transformative Brooklyn startup Windowfarms will bring the “farm” to NExT in McCarren Park. Windowfarms will allow attendees to experience that salad grown in the window of a city apartment can taste like it’s straight from the big country farm. By building a “farm” using their innovative Windowfarm systems right in McCarren Park, attendees won’t just see what’s next, they will taste it too!

VOXON will unveil a sneak peek of the Voxiebox – the world’s first Volumetric Entertainment System – with never before seen voxel-based experiences for NExT attendees. Witness breakthrough volumetric display technology that leaves 2D pixel-based screens behind to mesmerize you with real 3D voxels visible with the naked eye. Remember when Makerbot was just an open source dream? Don’t miss this opportunity to get hands on with a Voxiebox before it takes the world by storm!

Fresh off its seed round led by Cameron and Tyler Winkelvoss, Hukkster tracks selected products online and lets you know when they go on sale. It’s the ultimate deal finder and each user is their own curator. For the duration of NExT, participating attendees will be offered limited time offers to get special deals throughout Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

Northside will also be partnering with Red Bull Creation. Red Bull Creation is a national 72-hour themed innovation competition pitting six teams of makers, hackers and inventors against each other in a live-build format from June 12-16 at McCarren Park during NExT. In its third year, the annual maker competition will feature new technology to inspire creative submissions starting April 8.
RASHED’S PICK

Jack Reacher’s Rules: Don’t let Tom Cruise’s role as crime-busting Jack Reacher fool you. The fictional former military officer is as tough as it gets and this book explains why. Reacher’s “Rules of Coffee” are a must-read!

JACLYN’S PICK

Andy Warhol Campbell’s Tomato Soup Limited Edition: The soup tastes the same, but these limited-edition, Warhol-inspired cans are way better. They come in four styles, are available at Target stores and each come with a nugget of wisdom from the pop art icon. Get them while you can—their 15 minutes are almost up!

CHRIS’ PICK

Wiretap Crash’s Hand Over Fist EP: Wiretap Crash is a kick-ass post-hardcore band from LI that’s best experienced live. A super-group of sorts—with former members of Mind Over Matter, The Movielife and Dearly Departed, among others—this EP, Hand Over Fist, their only release to date, is the perfect introduction.

SPENCER’S PICK

Hallucinations by Oliver Sachs: Are the pink elephants real? They are if you think so. In Hallucinations, the brilliant professor of neurology, Oliver Sachs, shows how substantial our curious apparitions can be, and what their appearance says about the brain and its grip on reality. He says hallucinating is a vital part of the human condition. Come along as this wise guide explores the far reaches of our minds.
