Police said the suspect tried to obtain a replacement credit card in the victim's name.

A Syosset man has been arrested for identity theft after he tried to get a UPS deliverer to hand over a package containing a replacement credit card in the victim’s name, Nassau County police said.

Emmanuel Ladipo was charged with identity theft, attempted grand larceny, petit larceny and traffic offenses.

Police said the 28-year-old approached the UPS driver in front of the victim’s Marlene Drive home and said that the package was his, but the driver told Ladipo that he needed to see proper identification before he fled.

The driver told a resident what happened and to call 911. Investigators learned that Ladipo was seen ringing the doorbell of the house earlier the same day and took an envelope from the mailbox, authorities said.

The UPS package turned out to contain a replacement American Express credit card in the name of the victim, who told detectives that she had been the victim of identity theft and that someone had ordered the spare in her name, police said.

Ladipo will be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Muchos Mexican-themed, cerveza-fueled fiestas across LI will celebrate the national holiday for America’s allies south of the border.

Cinco de Mayo is on Sunday, which means muchos Mexican-themed, cerveza-fueled fiestas are planned Saturday and Sunday across Long Island to celebrate the national holiday for America’s allies south of the border.

The events range from fundraisers for Superstorm Sandy survivors and family events for the kids to local bars and restaurants offering specials on burritos, margaritas and Coronas—so break out that souvenir sombrero from Cancun.

But, before leaving the house in a poncho, here’s a quick North American history refresher lesson: Cinco de Mayo is not—like some people mistakenly believe—Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept.16.

The holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla, when Mexican forces turned back invading French troops in 1862—a symbol of resiliency for the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking nation.

And for those who still remember their high school Spanish 101, here’s a potentially useful bonus factoid—a Mexican saying that may come in handy on the Long Island Rail Road this weekend: “A boca de borracho, oídos de cantinero.”

It translates to “the mouth of drunk, ears of barman.” It basically means ignore the loud drunks.

Frederick Flowers had pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and other charges.

A school bus driver was sentenced Monday to a year in jail for crashing a minibus with five children aboard into a Syosset home while he was drunk last fall.

Frederick Flowers had pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and other charges at Nassau County court.

Prosecutors said the 66-year-old Massapequa Park man was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed the bus into a house on Teibrook Avenue in October.

Flowers told the court he was “beyond sorry” and his lawyer said he repeatedly asked how the children are doing, according to NBC New York.

The five kids—ages 5, 6, 8 and two age 9—were not hurt and nobody was in the home at the time.

Expect sunny skies this weekend.

Hold on Long Island—the storm is almost over.

The nor’easter that dropped up to 8 inches of snow on the Island Friday is finally nearing its end after a two-day event that included a mix of rain and snow, strong gusty winds and plenty of armchair forecasting.

After some residents pooh-poohed the first round of the storm, which sprinkled the area with 1 to 3 inches of snow, the nor’easter’s final act brought heavier snowfall that slushed up roadways and slowed the morning commute.

The storm brought 8 inches of snow to Syosset and more than 7 inches to other communities. Orient saw the highest accumulation in Suffolk County, according to the weather service, with 7.1 inches.

Forecasters with the Upton-based National Weather Service said a wintry mix of rain and snow will continue to fall over the next several hours, but the worst is behind us. Soon it will taper off and give way to much-needed sunny skies this weekend—and temperatures in the upper 40s.

Some of the roads across the Island are still wet but it’s not expected to seriously impact the evening commute, though they could freeze overnight when temperatures drop under 30 degrees.

The winter storm, which has lingered over Long Island for more than two days, was more of a headache than anything else. Long Island Power Authority customers didn’t go through prolonged outages, and public transportation, specifically the Long Island Rail Road, wasn’t adversely impacted.

The only major disruption came in the air, with travelers facing delays at area airports. Islip’s Long Island MacArthur Airport cancelled flights late Wednesday but continued normal operations Thursday morning.

As for this weekend, forecasters are calling for sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 40s. There’s even better news for Monday, meteorologists said, with temperatures possibly piercing 50 degrees.
