Ex-Islip Public Safety Commissioner Indicted for Bribery

The ex-Town of Islip public safety commissioner, who resigned last week citing health concerns, has been accused of accepting bribes and coercing four people into refusing to accept town jobs. John Carney, 54, of West Islip, and Assistant Fire Chief Michael Allen, 41, of Holbrook, both surrendered to Suffolk County authorities Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to charges in a 16-count grand jury indictment.

Suffolk Pols OK 5-cent Shopping Bag Fee

Suffolk County lawmakers approved a 5-cent fee on single-use paper and plastic bags in a measure intended to encourage the use of reusable bags when shoppers make purchases at local stores. Legislators passed the bill Wednesday by a vote of 13-4 and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signaled his intent to sign the bill into law. Retailers that fail to collect the nickel would be subject to a $500 fine, once the law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2018.
