A Wyandanch Memorial High School assistant principal was arrested Monday for allegedly sending inappropriate text messages to students and faculty members, Suffolk County police said.

Craig Cohen, 47, was arrested Monday morning as he left his Northport home, police said. He was charged with three counts of aggravated harassment and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. Cohen was held overnight at the First Precinct and will be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Police said an investigation revealed that Cohen, who has been employed at the school for eight years, sent “several inappropriate texts to various students and faculty members.”

Some of the messages were “sexual in nature,” police said in a news release. The texts were sent in February and March of this year, according to police.

Wyandanch Union Free School District Superintendent Pless M. Dickerson said in a statement posted on the district’s website that school officials received word of the alleged inappropriate messages after school hours on Monday.

Without referencing Cohen by name, the statement said, “the staff member has been reassigned immediately and further appropriate action will be taken by the school District pending the results of the investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.”

Police are asking anyone who may have information regarding this case to call 631-854-8126.

The cases bring the number of armed Suffolk home invasions in the past month to 11.

Suffolk County police are investigating a pair of armed home invasions seven miles and two hours apart over the weekend that brought the number of such cases in the past month to 11.

In the first of the most recent cases, two men broke into a Pleasantview Court home in Copiague, flashed a gun, demanded money and pistol-whipped a man inside at 9:20 p.m. Friday, police said. The suspects, described only as black men, fled with cash and property, police said.

Then at 11:40 p.m. Friday, three armed men kicked in the back door of a North 17th Street home in Wyandanch, stole money from the victims inside and fled the scene. The trio was only described as a group of Hispanic men.

A police spokesman could not confirm initial reports that the suspects were armed with a pistol and a machete but did say there have been no arrests in either case. It was unclear if there were any injuries in the second case.

The pair of Feb. 15 cases bring into the double digits the number of armed home invasions in Suffolk since Jan. 15, when there were five such incidents in a week in Mastic, North Lindenhurst, Dix Hills, Huntington and Coram. There were five arrested in the Huntington case and three arrested in the North Lindenhurt case.

A sixth armed home invasion was reported in Gordon Heights on Jan. 25, two days before a 21-year-old man was gunned down by home invaders in Flanders.

Three people have been arrested for the eighth armed home invasion in Halesite on Feb. 5 and another trio has been charged with the ninth home invasion in Central Islip in the early morning hours of Feb. 7.

Police are continuing the investigations.

Three people have been accused of committing an armed home invasion in Halesite last week, one of nine similar Suffolk cases in a recent three-week span.

The trio broke into a New York Avenue apartment while armed with at least one gun, stole money from a victim inside and fled the scene at 11:50 p.m. Feb. 5, a Suffolk County police spokeswoman said.

Police arrested 27-year-old John Steele of Wyandanch on Sunday. His two alleged accomplices, 23-year-old Belinda Ortiz of Brentwood and 21-year-old Tasean Berry of Deer Park, were arrested on Monday.

Bail for Steele was set at $500,000 bond or $250,000 cash. He is due back in court Thursday.

Of the nine armed Suffolk home invasions since Jan. 15, one left a 21-year-old Flanders man dead last month and another in Central Islip last week left two victims hospitalized after one was shot and the other was pistol-whipped.
