Roller Skating – In-Line Skating – Skateboarding – Scooters
With the warmer weather approaching and so many youngsters beginning to spend time out of doors and along Seventh Street, I would like to mention that according to New York State law, no person less than 14 years of age, shall skate, glide or use in-line skates, skateboards or ride a scooter unless they are wearing a helmet. The helmet must be a good fit fastened securely on the head of the wearer with helmet straps securely fastened.
Any person who violates the provisions of the law faces a civil fine of up to $50. But more importantly, the safety of the youngsters and those around them are paramount. Please make sure your child is wearing the proper safety equipment.
Outdoor Dining
Working under a special permit from the village, food establishments on Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue have placed tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for your convenience and enjoyment. Please stop by to let the merchants know that you appreciate their efforts and enjoy the many fine tastes of Garden City. As of today, there are 27 establishments that are participating in the Outdoor Dining Program.
Tree Planting
The incorporated village has started its spring tree planting utilizing a private contractor, who was selected through the competitive bidding process. We will plant approximately 152 trees and shrubs throughout the village. The spring tree planting replaces those removed and also adds additional trees to our village.
It should be noted that our tree removal contract called for the preventative maintenance pruning of 527 trees, which together with those pruned by the village forces result in a safer village and reduces tree damage due to storms.
Landscapers
Please ask your landscapers to be courteous to your neighbors and to not use their leaf blowers to blow any debris and/or leaves/grass clippings onto your neighbor’s property. Also remind landscapers that the use of motorized equipment is not permitted before 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. weekends.
School Budget Vote
Residents are urged to vote on the school district’s budget May 19, at the Garden City High School gym. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you have any questions regarding the school budget, you may contact the School District’s Business Office at 478-1040.
Board of Trustees Meetings
The next board of trustees meeting will be held Thursday, May 21. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at Village Hall.
Village’s Website
I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. One item that is listed on the village’s website under the heading of the Recreation Department is its listing of the various parks within the village as well as their hours of operation.
