Northwest Nassau Parish Voice Affililate was formed by faith-filled Catholics in the wake of the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church to support victims of abuse, priests of integrity and to call for the restructuring of the church. May is a very special month for Soroptimist International of Nassau County (SINC)! SINC is celebrating Young Women and Philanthropy. It’s the month when SINC presents the Violet Richardson Award, honoring a young woman for volunteer action. This year’s recipient is East Meadow resident Jordan Davidson, a W. Tresper Clarke High School student, Girl Scout Gold Reward recipient and Mary Brennan Inn volunteer. Jordan’s Gold Award project, “Knitting from the Heart,” resulted in an array of beautifully hand created scarves and hats – over 100 of them – which she donated to the guests of the Mary Brennan Inn. Seniors Connections Forum on Education in Retirement

The Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St., will host “Education in Retirement”, the third and final program in a series of Spring Senior Connections Public Forums. The program will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the large meeting room on the library’s lower level. Refreshments will be served and an elevator is available. No registration is required. Walter Chaskel will discuss the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Farmingdale State University, which is an educational program for mature learners designed to provide lifelong learning experiences. Mr. Chaskel, who is a volunteer ambassador for Elderhostel, will also explain the educational opportunities with Elderhostel, a travel program for adults 55 years and older. Call 742-8405.

Blood Drive

Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, invites members of the community to make a blood donation in its annual Celebrate Summer Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the College Center Building. The donation process takes less than an hour and light refreshments will be served to participants. Donors must be at least 17 years old, in good health, bring photo ID. Donors eat before donating. 56th Annual Memorial Day Fair

The 56th annual Memorial Day Fair and Crafts Fest will be held from noon to 4 p.m. following the village parade and the memorial services at Garden City Middle School. The fair is sponsored and held on the grounds of The Cathedral of the Incarnation, 50 Cathedral Ave. There will be games, rides, refreshments and a vast assortment of crafts. In addition, free patriotic concerts by the Cathedral‘s organists and choirmasters, Larry Tremsky and Alistair Nelson, will be available. A free tour of the historical cathedral will also be featured.

Golf and Tennis Classic

The MIRACLE Foundation, a not-for-profit cancer foundation, will host its 10th annual Michael J. Tenaglia Golf and Tennis Classic at the Cherry Valley Club and the Garden City Country Club on June 8. The event, which attracts influential leaders in business and industry, will posthumously honor foundation co-founder Michael J. Tenaglia for taking a dream to help patients and families touched by cancer and making it a reality. The outing includes golf and tennis tournaments, a silent auction and fabulous raffle prizes. This year’s event will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of The MIRACLE Foundation as a leader in promoting cancer research and innovative treatment in the Long Island and New York metropolitan area. SCOPE Spring Trip

To Gurney’s Inn and Gosman’s Dock on May 31.
