Café Ablaze Coffeehouse

Café Ablaze Christian Coffeehouse reopens to feature CrossCiti, an up and coming new Christian band with contemporary roots and a bluesy flavor with a Latin twist that has shared the stage with great musicians, including Grammy, Gospel and Dove award winners. Great coffee and desserts, candlelit tables, and uplifting music are offered in a friendly, casual atmosphere. Singles, couples and groups of friends are welcome. 56th Annual Memorial Day Fair

The 56th annual Memorial Day Fair and Crafts Fest will be held from noon to 4 p.m. following the village parade and the memorial services at Garden City Middle School. The fair is sponsored and held on the grounds of The Cathedral of the Incarnation, 50 Cathedral Ave. There will be games, rides, refreshments and a vast assortment of crafts. In addition, free patriotic concerts by the Cathedral‘s organists and choirmasters, Larry Tremsky and Alistair Nelson, will be available. A free tour of the historical cathedral will also be featured.

Society for Italian Culture

I Left My Heart in San Francisco

Plaza Theatrical Productions will present the music of Tony Bennett in “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” a concert at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St. This free public program is funded by The Friends of the Garden City Library. Youth and the Future of the Pro-Life Movement

The Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies invites the community to this Scholarly Lecture at 9 a.m. in the College Center Building. Several college and high school students will make scholarly presentations on various aspects of the pro-life perspective. Professors and individuals from pro-life organizations will serve as discussants for the student presentations. Three recently deceased Catholic intellectuals will be honored. SCOPE Spring Trip

To Gurney’s Inn and Gosman’s Dock. The bus will leave from the Herricks Community Center parking field, corner of Shelter Rock and Herricks Rds., at 9 a.m. A leisurely drive through the fabulous Hamptons leads the group to the newly renovated Gurney’s Inn where there will be a guided tour of the beautiful seaside resort in Montauk. A full-course luncheon offers a choice of chicken, beef or fish. Specify choice at registration. There will be a stop at Gosman’s Dock for browsing and shopping. Garden City Young Professional Networking Event

Young professionals whose business is based on referrals and would benefit from word of mouth recommendations should attend a networking event at 6 p.m. at Mumon Japanese restaurant, located at 1300 Franklin Avenue in Garden City (747-3388). There will be a cash bar. Please bring a $10 donation in support of Jake’s team, which will be walking May 30 in hopes for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. There will be opportunities to purchase Jake’s team T-shirts as well, for an additional cost. Events of the night include a speed networking style meet and greet, so please prepare a short synopsis on where you work and what you do and hope to accomplish, followed by a speech from Jake’s mother, Danielle Genova, explaining the importance of research in hopes for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Dan Smith will then be giving a brief talk about estate planning and how it pertains to the age group.

Herricks High School Ensemble

The Herricks High School select music ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, the Chamber Choir, Women’s Choir and the Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert at the new Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, 2 South Ave., at 7:30 p.m. The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Scott Stickley, is a highly skilled group of musicians who have earned highest ratings at NYSSMA, have performed at the MENC All-Eastern Conference as well as the NYSSMA Winter Conference. The Chamber Choir, under the direction of Louise O’Hanlon, has consistently won Gold with Distinction ratings at NYSSMA and has performed in several local choral festivals. The newly-formed Women’s Choir, also under Ms. O’Hanlon’s direction, will attend NYSSMA this year, for the first time. The Chamber Orchestra, led by Robin Maddox, has also won highest NYSSMA ratings. This spring they performed at the American String Teachers Convention in Atlanta in an invitational competition won Superior ratings and an Honorable Mention. Free and open to the public. Lecture Series

Nassau Health Care Corporation, in conjunction with the NC Dept. of Health and Human Services, will hold an informative and interactive lecture series hosted by Mitchell Rubin, MD, VP for Ambulatory Care and Community Medicine, aimed at addressing and improving everyday health issues and concerns. The free lecture series, “Tips for a Healthier You,” will be held on the first Thursday of the month (through June 4) from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Health and Human Services Building, 60 Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale. Today’s lecture: My Aching Back. And Other Strains and Pains.

Red Molly in Concert

Red Molly (Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Carolann Solebello) will perform in concert at Garden Stage at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 8 p.m. Red Molly’s first full-length offering, Never Been to Vegas, was released in July 2006. Recorded before a studio audience of fans and friends, it is a collection of 14 carefully chosen songs that span more than a century of great American songwriting.

Dodge Ball Tournament/Dance

Presented by the Altar Server and Youth Ministries. The tournament will be held in the McCloskey Auditorium at St. Anne’s. Grades 3 to 5 from noon to 2 p.m. Grades 6 to 12 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Snacks, drinks, awesome raffle baskets, Guitar Hero, rock band. Mass in the church at 5 p.m. Dance at Club Dodge featuring DJ CJam in the cafeteria from 7 to 10 p.m. Fruity smoothies, amazing blender drinks. Tickets $10 per person. Dance at Club Dodge tickets $5 per person. The program will benefit parish families in need.

Conducted by AAA New York in the Garden City office located at 229 Seventh St. The six-hour course allows participants to get the latest driving information from AAA-certified instructors, a 10 percent discount on collision and liability insurance and a reduction of up to four points from driver’s license. Golf and Tennis Classic

The MIRACLE Foundation, a not-for-profit cancer foundation, will host its 10th annual Michael J. Tenaglia Golf and Tennis Classic at the Cherry Valley Club and the Garden City Country Club on June 8. The event, which attracts influential leaders in business and industry, will posthumously honor foundation co-founder Michael J. Tenaglia for taking a dream to help patients and families touched by cancer and making it a reality. The outing includes golf and tennis tournaments, a silent auction and fabulous raffle prizes. This year’s event will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of The MIRACLE Foundation as a leader in promoting cancer research and innovative treatment in the Long Island and New York metropolitan area. Free Hotline for Those Dealing with Addiction

Anyone who has experienced a loved one suffering from addiction knows all too well that it affects more people than just the addicted; everyone close to a person addicted to drugs or alcohol feels the effects. Residents of Nassau County who are dealing with or affected by drug oralcohol addiction are urged to urged to call the NC Dept. of Drug and Alcohol Addiction’s free, anonymous 24/7 hotline, run by Long Island Crisis Center, at 481-4000.

Alzheimer’s Day Program

Herricks Alzheimer’s Day Program “Our Space.” This social day program serves seniors with early to moderate dementia and offers them a chance to engage in social and recreational activities including music, art and exercise in a safe, supervised environment. At the same time, the caregiver can enjoy a respite. The program meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Herricks Community Center, 999 Herricks Rd., New Hyde Park.
