Edelman, Lee and Loomis Garner Board Seats
In Hicksville, residents voted 1,608 to 929 in favor of the school district’s 2009-2010 spending plan of $110,943,748. The approved budget, listed on the ballot as Proposition #1, represents a 2.32 percent or $2,515,788 increase over the current year’s spending plan.
Residents also approved Proposition #2, which enables the district to establish a capital reserve fund in the amount of $850,000 for a probable term of three years to fund reconstruction of a safer and more efficient middle school bus loop and corresponding parking lot, including demolition of existing asphalt parking lots and driveways north of the middle school, repaving of said area with new curbing, sidewalks, drywells, drainage systems, landscaping and related site work as well as architect and project management fees. Proposition #2 passed by a vote of 1,451 to 1,004.
Proposition #3, which asked votes to allocate $50,000 to the Hicksville Gregory Museum for educational services associated with its programs, was approved by a vote of 1,434 to 946.
In the race for school board trustee, Anthony Edelman, who ran unopposed, was re-elected to a three-year term. Edelman received 1456 votes. Joanne Owens, who was seeking re-election and being challenged by Maureen Lee, lost her seat. Lee received 1,118 votes; Owens received 1,062.
Residents also voted in favor of the Hicksville Public Library’s 2009-2010 budget of $3,715,360, which represents a 14.37 percent or $623,640 decrease over the current year’s spending plan. Residents voted 1,502 to 842 in favor of the budget. Additionally, Harold Loomis, who ran unopposed for the library’s board of trustees, received 1,522 votes. Trustee terms are five years.
