Incumbent Ousted in Levittown, Incumbent and Newcomer Elected in IT
The Levittown and Island Trees school budget votes and trustee elections were held on May 19 at various local schools.
Levittown
The Levittown Public Schools budget for the 2009/10 school year of $183,182,412 passed in a 2,247 to 2,072 vote. The tax levy increase is 3.95 percent.
There was one incumbent and three challengers running for two available trustee positions on the Levittown Board of Education. Incumbent Hector Santiago vied against Ed Powers, Kevin Regan and former Trustee Diane Shapiro. Trustee John Garvey did not seek re-election. Regan and Powers garnered the most votes and secured the positions. Their three-year terms will begin in July.
The results were reported by District Clerk Elizabeth Appelbaum and are as follows: Kevin Regan – 2,020, Ed Powers – 1,958, Diane Shapiro – 1,828 and Hector Santiago – 1,256.
Residents also voted on Proposition No. 2 – Transportation Mileage. Voters approved, 2,113 to 1,795, to allow the district to modify its transportation eligibility policy. The policy, which provides transportation for students in grades kindergarten through fifth who live more than one-half mile from the school they attend, be modified to increase said distance to three-quarters of a mile, effective September, 2009; which modification would result in an estimated savings of $800,000 in the 2009/10 budget.
Island Trees
Residents passed the Island Trees Schools budget of $56,319,991 for the 2009/10 school year in a 869 to 486 vote. The 2009/10 tax levy represents a 3.98 percent increase.
Residents also elected board of education incumbent Christine Holt and newcomer Kim McDonough. Christine Holt was challenged for her seat by William Buchanan, while Brian Kelty, Rosanna Lundy-Kluth and Kim McDonough vied for Joseph Buda’s trustee position, as he did not seek re-election.
The results were reported by Assistant Superintendent for Finance & Administration Dana DiCapua and are as follows: Christine Holt – 930 votes, William Buchanan – 464 votes. Kim McDonough – 838 votes, Brian Kelty – 335 votes and Rosanna Lundy-Kluth – 302 votes.
