Lighthouse Development

Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias in conjunction with the Concerned Citizens Association of Farmingdale will be hosting a public forum regarding the proposed redevelopment of the Nassau Coliseum and surrounding area. A presenter from the Lighthouse Development Group will be present to detail the proposed project as well as answer any questions. The meeting will be held at the Farmingdale Library at 7 p.m. For more information contact Legislator Dave Mejias at 571-6214.

The LI Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation invites its adult friends with Type 1 Diabetes to a Happy Hour at the 56th Fighter Group, 7160 Republic Airport, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. You may stay as late as you like. Art in the Park Event Seeks Local Artists

The Women’s Club of Farmingdale is sponsoring the Second Annual Art Show and Sale on Sept. 12 (rain date Sept. 13) on the Village Green in Farmingdale. Artists are invited to bring their paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures to show. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, third place and honorable mention placement. Reservations are available now. Entry fee is $50 (not refundable) for a 10-foot square area. Wine Tasting/Poetry/Taste of Huntington

An evening of wine tasting, poetry and a taste of Huntington will be held on June 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Walt Whitman House, 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., West Hills, to benefit Last Hope Animal Rescue of Syosset. The evening will feature wines donated by Stew Leonard’s, select readings of Walt Whitman poems by “The Walt Whitman Project, Greg Trupiano, artistic director, and a selection of treats from several Huntington restaurants. Tickets are $40 pp in advance; $45 pp at the door. Tours of the WW birthplace will be available at a minimal charge. Learn Sign Language

The Mill Neck Foundation for Deaf Ministry Sign Language Camp for Hearing Kids invites children ages 8 to 16 to learn a new language and have fun. Held on the campus of Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, the camp teaches beginning sign language in an enjoyable and unique way. In two sessions (July 13 through 17 and July 20 through 24), campers are divided by age (ages 8 to 12 and 13 to 16). ??Through activities, games and arts and crafts, campers are taught the sign language alphabet and numbers as well as signs for animals, foods, colors and much more. Campers in session one will have basic conversations in sign by the end of the camp and those with a prior knowledge of the language in session two will build on their current skills and focus on conversational sign. At the end of each week, a special presentation will be held for friends and family about what the students learned. Campers eat lunch daily with deaf students and interact with Mill Neck students during games, storytelling and swimming sessions. Classes are led by deaf instructors with hearing teacher assistance. Camp is held from 8:30 am to 3:30 p.m. daily and costs $230 per child (includes lunch and a book, arts and crafts, a notebook, a bag and more). Enrollment is limited. Call For Craft Vendors

Mill Neck Manor is calling for vendors of handmade items for its Annual Fall Harvest Festival, held on Oct. 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A favorite tradition on LI, visitors eagerly await the festival for its crafts, apples, pumpkins, pies and other delicious treats. Country crafts, offering handmade items and holiday gifts, are one of the festival’s main features. If you make or sell crafts and feel that you would be a great addition to the Festival, you are encouraged to apply. Vendors are assigned an outdoor space (10’x10’) with a table and two chairs. All vendors are required to have a tent or canopy; those vendors who do not own a suitable tent may rent one from Mill Neck Manor for a small fee. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center

A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. The Art Club

Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services

Located at 950 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. The following programs are offered:
• The Community Program at Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services is forming a new group for senior citizens. The golden years? The group is open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted. For information about this or any other services call 822-4060.
•A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services provides therapeutic and supportive services to people hampered in their functioning by mental illness, psychological difficulties and/or substance abuse and addiction problems. Among its services, the agency provides outpatient mental health services for children and adults living in Nassau County. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.
•Volunteers are needed by Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services to help staff the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The volunteers help raise much needed funds for the agency so that mental health and substance abuse programs can continue to be provided to the residents of Hicksville and the surrounding communities. Free Educational Services

Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. The LI Educational Opportunity Center offers programs leading to employment in a variety of fields as well as entrance to college. The LIEOC has satellite units in many areas. Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery

The Hatchery is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located on the south side of Route 25A on the Nassau-Suffolk border. For information call 692-6768. Weekend trout feeding at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission $3 for adults; children 5 to 12 and people over 65 $1.50; under 5 – free. Call for group tour information. Group programs will be held on selected Saturdays at 10 or 11 a.m. A reservation must be made in advance. Fish feeding demonstrations are held every Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to observe a staff member feeding thousands of trout at 1 and 3 p.m.

Help for Seniors

Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole). Free Training for

Displaced Homemakers

F.E.G.S. LI Division Suffolk Vocational Center/Displaced Homemaker Center, Amityville, offers free training to displaced homemakers who qualify. If you are divorced, widowed, separated, abandoned or a single parent receiving AFDC/TANF you might be eligible for our New Directions Workshops, Skills Training Program and Placement Center. Hope for Youth

Hope for Youth is a not-for-profit agency located in Amityville and serving LI families and youth since 1969. Caring families are being sought to be part of the agency’s Therapeutic Foster Care Program or the Emergency Foster Boarding home program. Extensive training is offered and support to foster parents.
