Bagels N A Hole Lot More “Wildcats” Vs. Glen Oaks “Marlins”
The star of the first game was Isabella Fazzolari who made an unassisted triple play. Paulina Valentine made a double play in the same game. We had all 14 girls play in the first game with Michaela Zabicki, Sarah Bush, Una Reid, Kaitlyn Stoyer, Katie Belmonte, Daniella Connor, Lauren Wasserman, Kristina Horan, Joanna Maurceri and Emily Budhram all smashed 3 hits apiece. Alana Moran had a big hit and made some nice plays in the field. In the second game, we had hits galore, with Katie Belmonte leading the team with five hits and 5 runs scored. Kaitlyn Stoyer and Kristina Horan and Daniella Connor all had 5 big hits in the game. Una Reid and Michaela Zabicki each hit doubles in the game. Sarah Bush and Paulina Valentine had 4 hits a piece. Alana Moran and Lauren Valencia both had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. It was another great season for the Wildcats.

Fundamentals of Ball “Dodgers”
Vs. Dr. William Facibene MD PC “Nationals”
The Dodgers again demonstrated that they are learning the “Fundamentals of Ball”. Gold glove awards go to Mathew Merolla and Jordan Seidenberg who made multiple 1 to 3 put outs. Batting trophies go to Cenzo Montoni for driving in 3 runs, Kevin Walsh and Joseph Muratore for driving in 2 runs each. The hustle award goes to Mathew Strocchia for beating a force out attempt at second base. The most improved batting awards go to Christian Zammora and Ryan Gonzalez who hit ropes to third base. Lastly, the most improved fielding award goes to Alex Okeef who made 2 unassisted put outs.

The Dodgers entered the tournament anxious to show off all that they learned and to come together for one final time as a team unit. Congratulations to Paul Depaulis, Ryan Gonzalez, Christian Goustas, Andrew Ha, Mathew Merolla, Cenzo Montoni, Joseph Muratore, Alex O’Keefe, Jordan Seidenberg, Mathew Strocchia, Kevin Walsh, and Christian Zamora for a well-played season.

Vs. Grant Thornton, LLP “Brewers”
In what was their last game of the regular season before heading into the playoffs, the mighty Cardinals displayed power pitching, an offensive surge and speed around the bases against a very good Brewers team today. Pitching ace Anthony Pitre was dominant on the mound with 6 strikeouts while Thomas Mangin was not only solid on the hill with 3 strikeouts, but was a threat offensively with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. Jake Leventhal closed out the game with a strikeout of his own. The offensive star for the Cardinals was Jared Hodes who hit his third double of the season, drove in 3 runs and scored 2 runs. Also contributing offensively were Michael Mellone (single, 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored), Alessandro Lacerra (single, 2 RBIs), Scott Schanter (single, 2 RBIs) and Ryan Hodes (single, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored) all of whom combined to steal 4 bases. Ryan Cooney stole 2 bases, drove in a run and scored a run while rising star Dylan Schmid drove in a run and flashed the leather in the field. Go Cardinals!

In what proved to be an incredibly exciting opening round playoff game, a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel was on display as the mighty Cardinals squared off against a strong Phillies team this evening. Aces Anthony Pitre (4 strikeouts) and Thomas Mangin (6 strikeouts) were dominant on the mound while holding their opponent scoreless for the first four innings of the game. Michael Mellone was solid on the hill for an inning while Alessandro Lacerra not only closed out the game with a strikeout of his own, but contributed offensively with 5 stolen bases. The offensive stars for the Cardinals were Jared Hodes who hit a single that drove in a run and Scott Schanter whose patience at the plate led to 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Ryan Cooney and Ryan Hodes displayed speed around the diamond with 3 stolen bases between them while Christopher Delgiorno and Dylan Schmid each flashed the leather in the field. Go Cardinals!

Vs. Dominick’s Italian & American Deli “Marlins”
Another great outing for the mighty Cardinals who exhibited pitching dominance and timely hitting in a second round playoff matchup against a solid Marlins team today. Pitching stars Anthony Pitre (4 strikeouts) and Thomas Mangin (3 strikeouts) were once again solid on the mound and held their opponent to one run in the first four innings of the game. Michael Mellone was also impressive on the hill with 2 strikeouts while Alessandro Lacerra closed out the game with 3 strikeouts of his own. The entire pitching staff also contributed offensively with a combined 6 hits including a double and a triple. Lucas Cowen did another great job behind the plate at catcher the entire game and continues to hone his craft. Jared Hodes had a single and made a great catch of a hard line drive hit to third base while Ryan Cooney fielded a sharply hit ball to second base and threw out the runner at first. Jake Leventhal safely reached first base on an error, stole 2 bases and scored a run. Ryan Hodes, Scott Schanter and Dylan Schmid all flashed the leather in the outfield. Go Cardinals!

Vs. Hillside Beverage “Rangers” 2
In a thrilling game that was extremely well-played by both teams, the Diamondbacks prevailed with a pressure-filled 4-2 semifinal victory in extra innings over the rollicking Rangers. Pitching was the word of the day for both teams, and the Diamondbacks were led by Elliot Weissman (1 unearned run), Brian Volk (2 scoreless innings with 5 Ks), Philip Chang (1 unearned run), Jordan Greiff (2 scoreless, tense innings) and Craig Cagner (earning the Save with a clutch scoreless 7th inning). Due to the level of pitching, hitting was hard to come by, but strong plate performances were turned in by Jordan Greiff and Elliot Weissman. Defensively the Diamondbacks were nearly flawless, thanks to Jack Tucker (key outfield catch), Jared Kaiman, Ben Newman (3 vital innings behind the plate), Dylan Kareff, Charlie Coodwin, Christopher Kerrane and Raymond Gresalfi.

The amazing Angels are the Merillon Upper Farms 2009 Champions! Behind outstanding pitching and stellar defense, the Angels defeated a tough Diamondbacks team to win the title in front of a huge crowd at Merillon Field. The pitching trio of John Napolitano, Andrew Colgan and Phillip Schifilliti allowed a total of only four runs in three playoff games. John Denara made the defensive play of the game when he scooped up a scorched ground ball and fired to first for the out. Michael Zuschlag was solid as usual at catcher and James Castaldi, Stephen Guy, Patrick McTiernan, Andrew Yun and Matt Solomon all provided strong defense in the field. Jimmy Denara and Matt Baronci also contributed to the Angels’ success in the playoffs. Interviewed after the game, coach Greg stated “I’m proud of each and every Angel. They deserved this!” Coach Jack agreed: “This might be one of the best teams I’ve ever coached.” When asked about the amazing team chemistry of the Angels, coach Steve responded “This is a great group of kids. We’ve enjoyed coaching them.”

In an exciting Championship Game following a terrific season, the Diamondbacks lost a heartbreaker 4-1 to the amazing Angels, and finished the season as the proud runners-up in the 2009 Merillon Upper Farms Division. The Diamondbacks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a big base hit from Jordan Greiff, and a series of walks. It then became a pitchers duel, and the Diamondbacks were led by the outstanding performances of Philip Chang, Brian Volk and Jordan Greiff. Stellar defense was turned in by Brian Volk (diving to catch an infield pop-up and also gunning out a runner at the plate), Ben Newman (3 strong innings behind the plate), Jack Tucker, Elliot Weissman, Jared Kaiman, Ben Newman, Dylan Kareff, Charlie Coodwin, Christopher Kerrane and Raymond Gresalfi. Congratulations to each and every member of the team who helped us get all the way to the finals. Thanks also to our sponsor and to Merillon for a great season.

The Rays came out on fire tonight in this exciting semifinal game. Anthony Lanzilotta and Matty Lorandini started things off by reaching base. Christian Carrick followed with a single knocking in our first run. The Rays then loaded the bases but came up empty. Ace TJ Goustas took the mound and proceeded to mow down Red batter after Red batter striking out 8. Great defense and support was led by Jack Nutall, Shin Oka, Max Cohn, Phil Silverstein, Mike Rhindress and Nick Favale. In the top of the fourth Nevin Nambiar hit a sizzling liner for a home run. Matt Mastoridis had a nice hit and was focused all game. Dominick Patrizi started our sixth inning rally with a nice single to the first base side. Nevin’s high pop up created some confusion and the Rays had 2 more runs on the board. The battery team of Christian and Anthony closed out the game with 5 strikeouts. Way to go Rays! Good Luck in the Championship game!

The Ray’s had TJ Goustas at the mound the first 2 innings flaunting his stuff. TJ Goustas threw 16 pitches to 6 batters. He struck out 1 and walked 1. His heat sinking pitches kept the opponents bats swinging allowing the defense to take down the first 6 batters in order. Two great defensive plays by Jack Nutall 3rd base to Nevin Nambiar 1st base denied 2 runners a base hit. Christian Carrick stole a base hit from the opponent while playing shortstop making a diving catch to deny the runner. Two great throws from catcher Anthony Lanzilotta to second base led to 2 outs and denied 2 runners a stolen base. Jack Nutall led off the bottom of the second with a base hit followed by a walk from Nevin Nambiar. Good Eyes from Matty Mastoridis at the plate led to a walk, loading the bases with two outs. A key base walk from Max Cohn brought the 1st run in, giving the Ray’s the lead 1-0 at the bottom of the second inning. Christian Carrick pitched the 3rd, 4th ,5th , and 6th inning throwing 48 pitches to 19 batters. H e earned 5 strike outs, 2 walks. Strong defense by Nicholas Favale, Michael Rhindress, Phil Silverstein and Dominick Patrizi held the opponents at bay. Matty Lorandini made a diving catch between 1st and 2nd base in the 6th inning, stealing another base hit from the opponents. Once again Good Eyes from TJ Goustas and Shin Oka led to key walks in the fifth for the Ray’s. The runners advanced on a wild pitch setting the stage for the winning runs to come in. Max Cohn slams one to third putting the runners in motion. More great defense in the 6th inning held the opponents at bay. The Ray’s are Champions winning it 3 -1!

Vs. Virgilio Chiropractic “River Sharks” 4
The first round of the playoffs showed how well balanced these teams are. From the beginning nervousness was the dominant force for 2 excellent teams. On the hill for the Ducks’ Brennan Scanlon, Ben Lee, and Justin Marder battled through a difficult River Shark line up. Evan Clark and Mike Kemmet were solid behind the plate. Defensively, Adeel Bari, Andrew Curcio, Bret Dieber, Ethan Volk, Tom Kemmet, and Matthew Chaleff, all were excellent in the field. Offensively, a series of walks, stolen bases, hits, and RBI’s were able to put the Ducks ahead by 2 runs. Today the Ducks struggled for a win, knowing a loss meant elimination. They played unselfishly, not quitting on themselves or their teammates. Today, as a team, and as individuals they exhibited character! Justin Roth and Mike Lopez were on the DL we hope for their return by Saturday.

Vs. State Bank of Long Island “Pride” 8
In what some people have called the best Majors’ game played ever, or at least this season, the Cyclones defeated the Pride in an 8 inning playoff game. Both the Pride and the Cyclones played great ball. After taking a 1-0 first inning lead the Cyclones were trailing 7-1 going into the bottom of the 4th inning. After a Guisieppe LoDuca walk, John Young hit a 2-run homer. In the bottom of the 5th inning the Cyclones scored 4 runs to tie the game on the strength of a Tyler Ng and Brandon Martinez singles and Jeff Gordon, Nick Winkhart and Guisieppe LoDuca doubles. The Cyclones were able to mount their comeback on the strength of Jonathan Cioffi’s well pitched 4 innings allowing only 1 unearned run. Special kudos to Matt Theodorpoulos and Peter Dunn for playing solid defense that kept the game close. The Pride took the lead in the top of the 8th inning but the Cyclones mounted their last comeback when Guisieppe Loduca tripled and scored on a passed ball, John Young was intentionally walked for the second time, Jonathan Cioffi reached first on an infield single, Peter Dunn was also intentionally walked. That set the stage for the game winning hit by Mitch Cohen. Mitch also pitched a beautiful 8th inning. Edik Imanov, was awarded the game ball for playing hard the entire season and never giving up.

Championship Saturday brought out the “A” game in both teams. These kids were incredible! Each team played nearly perfect ball. The score tells of the pitching dual that took place this afternoon. Starting on the hill for the Ducks was Brennan Scanlon. Brennan pitched a dominate 3 innings, with 6 K’s, allowing only 1 hit, and 1 walk. Ben Lee closed out the remaining 3 innings with 7 K’s allowing 0 hits. Championships are won with defense, and today that proved true. Behind the plate Evan Clark nailed a cyclone at 2nd attempting to steal, and Mike Kemmet was brilliant, each remaining solid directing the Ducks on every play. In the field Adeel Bari, Mike Lopez, Andrew Curcio, Justin Marder, Ethan Volk, Justin Roth, Mike Kemmet, Matt Chaleff, Bret Dieber, and Tom Kemmet were flawless. Offensively, Ben Lee slammed a triple, subsequently scoring the only run of the game on a wild pitch. Bret Dieber, also slammed a triple, but was called out sliding into home on a fielders choice. Evan Clark, and Justin Marder also reached on singles. With the game ending in the top of the 6th, the Ducks were crowned the 2009 Major’s Division Champions! Congratulations to the boys.
