On June 27-28 the Levittown Athletic Club Slammers set out to do something no other LAC 14U team has ever done: win the Babe Ruth State Championship. In the opening game the Slammers defeated Babylon by a score of 10-0 followed by a 5-1 win against host Glen Cove.
On Sunday the Slammers came up against the Pelham Bay Belles, needing one win to advance to the championship game on Monday night. The Slammers rose to the occasion and defeated the Belles by a score of 6-1 to advance to the championship game against Pelham Bay.
In the final game the Slammers jumped out to a one to nothing lead in the third inning on a base hit by Shamar Sanchez followed by a ground out and then an RBI single by Sabrina Gordek. Pelham answered by scoring three runs in the fourth inning on a couple of walks, a two run triple, and a sac fly. LAC would counter in the bottom of the fifth with a couple of base hits followed by a three run homerun by Sabrina Gordek to knot the score at 4. The team traded outs in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh Sabrina Gordek and Ashley Massoni led off with a pair of singles. Up to the plate came the Slammers big bat, Sam Basile, who had delivered a long three run homerun in the previous game, but Basile went down swinging for the first out. Up to the plate came Alannah Basile with a chance to win the game. With the count no balls and one strike, Alannah delivered a line drive over the outstretched hands of the third baseman scoring Sabrina Gordek from second base with the winning run. Slammers Win.
Leading the way all weekend was the stellar pitching of Ashley Massoni who complied thirty-three strikeouts in four games. With First place finishes in Suffern and Glen Cove, a second place finish in the LAC Spring Bash, and a third place finish at The Great Balls of Fire tournament (third out of 22 teams) the Slammers have complied a season record of nineteen wins and three losses.
The coaching staff is extremely proud of the hard work and sportsmanship of each and every girl, and the support of all the parents (The Slammer Nation). Next up, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Hamilton, NJ July 17–20.
