NC Announces Veteran’s Discount Program

Modeled After Program Started by Levittown Chamber of Commerce

Back in February, the Levittown Chamber of Commerce announced the creation of a Veterans Recognition Program, which provided discounts for veterans at several local businesses. Now, six months later Nassau County is getting on board with a county-wide program for the same purpose.

“As we celebrate Independence Day, what better time to show our appreciation to the men and women of our armed forces who have preserved and protected our freedoms,” said County Clerk Maureen O’Connell.
The program is the brainchild of Levittown Chamber President Ann Torcivia.
“I got the idea when I listened to a Veteran’s Day service speech by Legislator Dennis Dunne,” Torcivia explained. “He said ‘veterans should get something free today.’ This town was built for the veterans. The chamber jumped on it because we want people to come to Levittown.”
Since its inception Torcivia said the program is effective.
“The storeowners are getting people in and I’m proud to say that it works,” she added.
Legislator Dunne, a Vietnam veteran himself, said that he is proud that the Levittown Chamber started this program and that the county has followed suit.
“Hopefully it’ll be nationwide,” he added. “For all those men and women who are prepared to die for this nation, it’s nice to give them something back.”
O’Connell stated that any veteran who files his or her discharge papers, also known as DD214 papers, will receive a discount card that can be used for local businesses that are participating in the program. O’Connell also said that the Office of the Nassau County Clerk will safeguard the DD214 papers free of charge so that they are available when the veterans or members of his or her family need them.
There are currently 75,000 veterans in Nassau County and thousands more who returned or will be returning from service. They can take advantage of discounts available from the following participating Levittown businesses:
