A record-breaking field of 349 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School at the 6th annual Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run on Sunday morning, July 12, and Garden City’s own Karen Pompay scored as the first woman overall.
Pompay crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 52 seconds, getting her to the finish 24 seconds in front of runner-up Annie Devlin of Chevy Chase, Maryland.
The 2009 run was held to benefit the Plainview/Syosset Scholarship Fund for local students considering a career in a medically related field and to support emergency facilities at Plainview and Syosset hospitals and better serve patients. This year’s run was in honor of the Emergency Departments at Plainview and Syosset hospitals, as represented by Gerard Brogan, MD, Joseph Garber, MD, Alan Kaplan, MD, Ronnie Melman, RN, and Sheila Kennedy, RN.
A big thank you to Race Coordinators Ric and Kathy DiVeglio of the Greater Long Island Running Club and to the Race Committee from Plainview and Syosset hospitals that made it all possible: Dr. Alan Mensch, Dr. Charles Farber, Jo Ellen Cole, Nicole D’Addario and Jeanne Beard. Thanks as well to major sponsors: the medical staffs at Plainview and Syosset Hospitals, Dr. Howard Matt, Alure Home Products, Axis Construction Corporation, Sitron-Hammel Radiology Group, Axis Construction Corporation, Huntington Hills Center for Health & Rehabilitation and Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation.
