Free Health Screenings

As an adjunct to Catholic Health Services of Long Island’s “Healthy Sundays” community health initiative, Mercy Medical Center will host a special free health screening from 4 to 9 p.m. at St. Agnes Cathedral, Quealy Pl. (opposite the Rockville Centre LIRR station). Free screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and body mass index will be provided by staff from Mercy Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital Center, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, St. Charles Hospital, St. Francis Hospital The Heart Center, and Catholic Home Care. Defensive Driving Course

The Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by Msgr. John’s Knights of Columbus, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church School cafeteria, lower level, 35 Dartmouth St. Save 10 percent on collision liability rates for three full years. Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients

A free belly dance workshop is offered to those who have had breast cancer from 7 to 8 p.m. The workshop, a program the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is held at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Ave., Garden City. Discover this captivating and beautiful art form from a professional belly dancer. Fitness professionals note that it can serve as a refreshing alternative to routine exercises. Blood Drive

LI Blood Services will hold a blood drive at The Garden City Library from 2 to 7:30 p.m. The bus mobile will be parked at 60 Seventh St. outside the library. Eligible donors must be between 16 and 76 years of age, with a minimum weight of 110 pounds and no tattoos within the past 12 months. Donors must have valid ID and know social security number. Aging Parents Presentation

Mercy Medical Center will present a free one-hour lecture on “My Parents Are Aging. What Do I Need to Know?” at 7:30 p.m. in the Mercy League Lounge on the hospital campus (located in the building opposite the hospital’s Emergency Department). Dr. Muhammad Ramzan and nurse practitioner Margaret Amodemo will discuss signs of aging that should be of concern, care and assistance that is available, and issues of importance that people might not even consider. The presentation will include information about Mercy Medical Center’s Geriatric Assessment Program, nutrition, prevention of falls, and the broad affects that an aging parent has on all members of a family. Blood Drive

Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre invites and encourages members of the public to participate in a Blood Drive to support LI Blood Services to from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the first floor of the St. Anne’s building on the hospital campus. Anyone between the ages of 17 and 75 who is in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Healthy individuals over 75 can donate blood if they present written permission from their physician obtained within two weeks of their donation. Local Marines/Families Golf Outing

The 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines Association will host its third Annual Golf Outing at Eisenhower Park to raise funds for the support of local Marine Reservists and their families. Play will take place on the Red and White Courses with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Check in begins at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque lunch. Play will be followed by a buffet dinner at the Carltun. Proceeds will help the nonprofit organization provide comfort and support to family members of deployed Marines; care packages for those on the frontlines of the War on Terror; and if need be, funds will be used to assist wounded Marines or provide for the survivors of any killed in the line of duty. Adolescents, Teens, Young Adults and Epilepsy

The Epilepsy Foundation of LI will feature Alison M. Pack, MD, at a workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Epilepsy Foundation of LI, 506 Stewart Ave. Dr. Pack is associate professor of clinical neurology at Columbia University. Award-Winning Acting Studio for Kids/Teens

A Class Act NY’s award-winning Manhattan-based acting studio for kids and teens still has a few spaces left in its One-Week Broadway Camp (Aug. 24 through Aug. 28) at the Sid Jacobson in Roslyn. Kids work with Broadway actors all week long in one-hour workshops. When kids aren’t in a workshop, they are rehearsing for their Final Showcase in which they make Off-Broadway debut at the JCC’s own theatre. Campers are bused to and from Manhattan on Wednesday to see a Broadway matinee in which they have a talk back with actors from the show. Ages: 7 to 16 (two groups split up according to age). Barbeque

Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion

Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept.11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts. At 7 p.m. converge at the Freeport Yacht Club for dinner and enjoyment of music of the ‘50s. Before starting home on Sunday, groups will meet at local diners for farewells over brunch. Call For Craft Vendors

Mill Neck Manor is calling for vendors of handmade items for its Annual Fall Harvest Festival, held on Oct. 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you make or sell crafts and feel that you would be a great addition to the Festival, you are encouraged to apply. Vendors are assigned an outdoor space (10’x10’) with a table and two chairs. All vendors are required to have a tent or canopy; those vendors who do not own a suitable tent may rent one from Mill Neck Manor for a small fee.
