Reach for the Stars Teen Talent Finals
Nassau County’s teen talent contest, Reach for the Stars, will hold its finals at Eisenhower Park’s Lakeside Theatre. Radio Disney personalities will host the show, which will begin at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free. Twenty-five Nassau County teenagers were chosen as finalists from an audition pool of 68 contestants. A panel of judges, including former Reach for the Stars winner and American Idol finalist, Kevin Covais, and professionals in the music and entertainment industry, will have the job of choosing the winners from a very talented group of young vocalists. Summer Vacation Bible School
The United Methodist Church, 2801 Hillside Avenue, New Hyde Park, will hold a Summer Vacation Bible School until Aug. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The school will include children’s lessons, games, crafts and refreshments in air-conditioned classrooms with experienced dedicated teachers. A $10 donation is requested. Live at LICM Theater – Chris Peters – “Sounds of Stories”.
At 1:30 p.m. join sound artist and composer Chris Peters as he tells classic fairytales, such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella in a whole new way. You will add to these fairytales using his collection of weird, wacky and wonderful musical instruments and noisemakers. Everyone will have lots of fun creating new twists to old stories using electrical and mechanical sound effect machines on stage. Each week we’ll be performing a new story. Ages: 5 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM Members), $8 for Theater only. All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City. Children must be accompanied by an adult. General Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old. Under 1 year old free. $9 seniors. WLICM Radio Theater at Long Island Children’s Museum
Join the fun at 1:30 p.m. in the LICM Theater and learn how old-time radio shows were created. Using stories we all know and love, kids will help create a live broadcast, old-time radio ads and live audience sounds. Each performance is unique, featuring such folk tales as “The Great Chief’s Drum, ” “The Three Little Pigs, ” or “The King with Dirty Feet”. Adults and kids alike will enjoy the fun of creating a unique onetime only broadcast at LICM. Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM Members), $8 for Theater only. Saint Aidan to Collect School Supplies
The Church of Saint Aidan will be collecting school supplies on Aug. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the front of the church or donations can be brought directly to the Parish Social Ministry Office the week before or after. The items particularly needed are backpacks, calculators, one-, three- and five-subject spiral Five Star notebooks, marble notebooks, plain and decorated folders, pencils, flexible three-ring binders, pens, colored markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, construction paper, and all other miscellaneous items. Donated items will be distributed to children here in our local schools. John’s Variety located at 81 Hillside Avenue is kindly offering a 10 percent discount to those purchasing items for the School Supply Drive.
