Garden City to Play Harlem Black Yankees
The Garden City Bombers baseball club and the Harlem Black Yankees travel baseball teams will play each other for the first time Saturday Aug. 22. Opening ceremonies at Community Park commence on field 2 at 6:30 p.m. This is the first contest between the elite team from Manhattan or versus, a Garden City team.
The Bombers are also announcing tryouts for Garden City residents who wish to play in this All-Star game, and the fall season 16U, 13U, 12U, and also announced that formation of a new 10U team. The team that will play the Harlem Black Yankees is the 13U team, for boys no older than 13 years old on May 1, 2010.
“We heard that Garden City has a storied baseball tradition,” said Joe Morgan, manager of the Harlem Black Yankees.
“We are excited to host the game between our kids,” said Kevin Buhse, a director of the Garden City Bombers Club. “New York is the place baseball was invented, and the New York metro area is one in which baseball remains the most popular sport. Both our communities are passionate about the game.”
The Bombers organization has selected Ken Marchisella, the varsity baseball coach from Christ the King High School, to coach the Garden City All-Star team playing against Harlem. Other Garden City coaches will include Joe Rocco, a batting instructor with the renowned Doyle Baseball School (Florida) and former college coach Lou Santos of Diamond Pros.
