Belle Santora Knows Oyster Bay
Belle Santora called to identify the Aug. 6 mystery picture. She said, “Today’s is the Mill Pond where the volunteers were cleaning up. Thank goodness I’m right; I don’t want to disappear from the paper!”
Ms. Santora also wanted to identify the picture from the previous week. She said, “It’s Bohack’s.” She remembered it as being on West Main Street, which caused us some consternation so it is worth mentioning. Was it there at one time? She, too, confirmed that the A&P was where Buckingham’s Variety Store is now located.
Ms. Santora said, “I knew Mr. Leuteman, the man who owned Bohack’s. I knew his wife Ann Markowitz. she lived on my block on School Street and they married late after he was widowed. That is how I remember Bohack’s.”
The photograph was sent in by Arthur Leuteman who was standing in the center of picture – and was third from the left: manager circa 1927.
The store opened in 1924 with Mr. Leuteman as manager. “It was located on Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, next to Joe Wiedner’s Drug Store,” said Mr. Leuteman, who now lives in Syosset, but remembers Oyster Bay well.
