The people of Garden City have always been proud of its sports and a new generation is ready to take up the gauntlet. The Garden City Bombers youth baseball team has completed a summer season in which they played more than 25 games against other 7 and under teams from around Nassau and Queens, and is preparing to move up to 8 and under competition for the fall baseball season.
“Most of these boys have been playing together as a team since they were 5 or 6 years old,” Coach Lou Santos said. “They had more than 40 practices last summer, and worked throughout the fall and winter to get ready for this year.”
The Bombers played in kid pitch and machine pitch competitions this summer, starting with a grueling four-game day tournament in Port Washington on Memorial Day. They moved into a summer kid pitch league playing South Shore teams through the summer at Community Park, and on weeknights also played in a machine pitch league in Queens. The team has been led by returning star Jason Brown, “Lefty” James McQuaid and new powerhitters William Welch, Matthew Clark and Ryan Pompay.
Family Traditions
Bomber players included defensive standout Chris Schwantner and his cousin Matthew Mohen. The cousins are continuing family traditions, as Chris’s father Mike was a standout pitcher at Garden City High School and Iona College and Matthew’s aunt, Kerry (Mohen) Cashin, played softball in Garden City and was recently inducted with her 1993 softball team into the Manhattan College Sports Hall of Fame. Brothers Brian and Tom Boland are following in the tradition of their older brother, who was a standout high school and college catcher; and standout brothers Kieran and Liam Dorney are creating a new dynasty!
