Wall of Hope Project
While playing handball after school in Hempstead, 15-year-old Michael Alguera and his friends were attacked, beaten and robbed. Mikey died playing on a court that had been abandoned because his school didn’t have the resources to repair or maintain it. His parents, neighbors, classmates, teachers, PTA members, District Attorney Kathleen M. Rice and representatives from local businesses and non-profits have joined together to find a way to offer the young people in the Village of Hempstead a safer place to play. They came to Paul Williams of the Inner City Handball Association for help and together they created the Wall of Hope Project to gather funds to build a safe court on school property in Mikey’s memory. Any monies that are raised above the actual cost of the court and memorial will be used for scholarships and tournament sponsorships. Anyone interested in helping may contact Paul Williams 718-703-7699, Rene Fiechter 571-1090 or Philip Mickulas Sr. 746-0350. A handball (9 a.m.), volleyball, softball, etc., BBQ (11:30 a.m.) and handball exhibition (1 p.m.) will be held today at Cedar Creek Park in the valley picnic area, Wantagh.
