The annual barbeque of Congregation Beth Israel Sisterhood will be held at 4 p.m. at 141 Hilton Ave., Hempstead. Live entertainment, all-you-can-eat buffet, raffle prizes. Wall of Hope Project
While playing handball after school in Hempstead, 15-year-old Michael Alguera and his friends were attacked, beaten and robbed. Mikey died playing on a court that had been abandoned because his school didn’t have the resources to repair or maintain it. His parents, neighbors, classmates, teachers, PTA members, District Attorney Kathleen M. Rice and representatives from local businesses and non-profits have joined together to find a way to offer the young people in the Village of Hempstead a safer place to play. They came to Paul Williams of the Inner City Handball Association for help and together they created the Wall of Hope Project to gather funds to build a safe court on school property in Mikey’s memory. Any monies that are raised above the actual cost of the court and memorial will be used for scholarships and tournament sponsorships. Award-Winning Acting Studio for Kids/Teens
A Class Act NY’s award-winning Manhattan-based acting studio for kids and teens still has a few spaces left in its One-Week Broadway Camp (Aug. 24 through Aug. 28) at the Sid Jacobson in Roslyn. Kids work with Broadway actors all week long in one-hour workshops. When kids aren’t in a workshop, they are rehearsing for their Final Showcase in which they make Off-Broadway debut at the JCC’s own theatre. Campers are bused to and from Manhattan on Wednesday to see a Broadway matinee in which they have a talk back with actors from the show. Ages: 7 to 16 (two groups split up according to age). Nassau County Board of Health
The regular monthly meeting of the Nassau County Board of Health will be held at the offices of the Nassau County Department of Health, 106 Charles Lindbergh Blvd, Uniondale. Use the south entrance to the building. The meeting will be held in the conference room. The board will convene at 1 p.m. and adjourn immediately for an Executive Session to discuss personnel matters. The public session will begin at approximately 2 p.m. Public comment is welcome after the regular session.

Volunteers Needed
The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over. Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion
Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept. 11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts.
