(Submitted by the Sewanhaka Central High School District)
On September 9, the Sewanhaka Central High School District will open its doors to approximately 8,400 students. This marks the 81st opening of school in the district, which has received national recognition for the quality of its educational programs.
The district is proud to report that 96 percent of the Class of 2009 received their diplomas in commencement ceremonies at Hofstra University last June. In addition, 95 percent of seniors earned Regents diplomas, while 55 percent merited Advanced Regents diplomas. Furthermore, 97 percent of graduates are pursuing their education at colleges and universities.
This summer, our administrators, directors, curriculum coordinators, chairpersons and teachers have been engaged in activities designed to enhance the education we provide to our students. Our directors, coordinators, chairpersons and teachers worked together in developing and updating curriculum guides for various courses in English, science, social studies and occupational education.
Additionally, many of our educators have participated in conferences and taken graduate courses to broaden their understanding of current educational issues.
For the first time in our district’s history, we sponsored our own technology institute. Over 100 faculty members, representing all five schools in the district, availed themselves of the opportunity to develop their understanding of how technology may be used to enhance student learning. Various workshops trained our teachers in the use of Google Earth, SMARTBoards, PowerPoint, Eschool, and several other programs.
On September 9, the Sewanhaka Central High School District, which includes Elmont Memorial High School, Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park Memorial High School, New Hyde Park Memorial High School and H. Frank Carey High School, will open its doors to a new year and new challenges. In this district, every day is an open school day. Ours is an open invitation; we want our communities to join with us in providing our children with an education to last a lifetime. Together we can accomplish great things.
