Yale Christian Academy Registration
Yale Christian Academy, 17 New South Rd., Hicksville, is a nonprofit organization seeking to serve children in the local communities by providing educational services. Trash2Treasure Street Fair/Cookout
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a Hicksville community cookout and yard sale at the Hicksville Boys & Girls Club, 79 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville. The rain date is scheduled for Sept. 12. The club is across the street from the local IHOP. This event will be hosted by Cornerstone, a new church in the Hicksville area. American Music/Vintage Base Ball
Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, will offer up 19th-century entertainment over the Labor Day weekend with period musical performances and dance as well as a series of “base ball” games. The “Olde Time Music Weekend” festival will take place on Sept. 5 and 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The musical events will be held at varying locations around the historic village, with fiddle music at the District No. 6 school and traditional music and dance (including reels and quadrilles) at the Noon Inn PicNic Grove. The OBVR Military Brass Sextet will perform each day at 2 and 3:15 p.m., while craftspeople demonstrate the art of decoy carving at the Conklin House, home of the local “bayman.” Traditional base ball matches will feature teams from the village’s 1884 league on Sept. 6, with players wearing the uniforms and equipment of the time. American Sign Language Classes
Interested in learning the third most popular language studied in the United States? Volunteers Needed
The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? Help for Seniors
Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole). Helping Hand for Caregivers
Caring for Caregivers is a nonprofit committee founded out of concern for those members of the community who are providing 24-hour care and supervision for a loved one in their home. The goal is to provide up to eight hours of professional respite care each month. The application process is need-based, easy to complete and respectful of the caregiver’s privacy. Once the application has been approved, the caregiver will contract with the agency of his/her choice for provision of service, for four hours during any two-week period, up to a maximum of eight hours per month. Applications are currently being accepted from the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Bethpage, Syosset, Woodbury and Hicksville areas. The committee’s hope is that these few hours will provide a little breathing space so that the caregiver can attend to his/her own needs. Call 433-8479 for an application.
