Irish Cultural Society
The society starts its 2009-2010 season with a literary topic. Kathleen S. Tully will speak on the subject of “The Women Who Inspired William Butler Yeats” at 8 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St., Garden City. The meeting is open to the public and there is no admission fee. Mrs. Tully will transport the audience into the poetic world created by W.B. Yeats which was inspired by some remarkable women, such as Maude Gonne, Madame Blavatsky, Katherine Tynan, Olivia Shakespeare, Lady Gregory and Constance Gore-Booth, among others. She will explore the relationships Yeats had with the women and the poems they inspired.

Meeting at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Spooner and Plainfield Ave. Crafts, sewing and cooking classes, work on community projects are offered. There are guest speaker at many meetings. American Sign Language Classes
Interested in learning the third most popular language studied in the United States? This fall, Mill Neck Services will offer American Sign Language classes at its new Day Habilitation and Interpreter Services building, 501 S. Broadway, Suite A, Hicksville. Within New York State, many school districts now recognize ASL as a “foreign” language, providing credit towards a Regents diploma. Enroll today in the level 1 adult ASL classes, to be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. through Nov. 30. As with other languages, the deaf community, in response to cultural and technological change, is constantly introducing new vocabulary. Register today and become a part of this expanding community. FP-Bellerose PTA First Meeting
The Floral Park-Bellerose PTA invites all committee chairs and parents to attend the first meeting of the school year at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium. The PTA will present the 2009-2010 budget and a vote will be taken. Guest speakers include Dr. Lynn Pombonyo, superintendent of the Floral Park-Bellerose School District, Dr. Thomas Piro, principal of Floral Park-Bellerose School, and Patrice Matthews, vice principal of Floral Park-Bellerose School. Refreshments will be served and children are welcome. Immediately following the general meeting, the PTA will conduct a short meeting of all committee chair people.

Serving Spirits at Spirit Day
The area at New Hyde Park Rd. and Dartmouth St. will be transformed into the annual playground known as Spirit Day. Rides, attractions, vendor’s music and food all add up to a memorable day. At 5 p.m., an outdoor Mass will be offered. The evening will culminates with the drawing of the Big Bucks Raffle winners. Plan on spending some time at Spirit Day, where fun food and laugher will all be in store.

Volunteers Needed
The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? •Look Good…Feel Better, sponsored by LIJ Medical Center in association with the National Cosmetology Association, the Toiletry Fragrance Association and the American Cancer Society. The program reaches out to women with cancer and teaches them how to best apply makeup and wear their hair while undergoing cancer treatment. •Family Promise of NC. Are you concerned about helping homeless families in our local communities? •Free/Low Cost Health Insurance. The residents of communities served by Mercy Medical Center will have the opportunity to apply for free or low cost health insurance for children, families and adults up to age 64 on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mercy’s Main Lobby. Staff from Catholic Charities of LI will assist you and our children applying for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs. The bi-lingual enrollers will screen adults for income eligibility for the state’s health insurance program Family Health Plus. Children are eligible for Child Health Plus. These programs cover medical check-ups, hospitalization, emergency care, prescriptions, vision and dental care.
•Zonta Club of LI, a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding. At meetings members discuss and learn about issues facing women, develop and conduct fun fundraising that benefits community programs and network with Zonta International programs. •Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes.
