Farmingdale High School’s Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving team opened their season last week and got off to a nice start. The Dalers faced power-house Manhasset in their first meet. Led by Captains Jill Anesta, Marissa Boccio, Lorraine Pye and Alexis Rzempoluch the girls all swam well, but came up short against the depth of the Conference I team falling 95 – 86.
The highlights of the meet included victories by the 200 Freestyle relay team of Sarah Hendrickson (JR), Jill Anesta (SR), Lorraine Pye(SR) and Marissa Boccio (SR) and the 400 Freestyle relay team of Pye, Anesta, Nora Reade (JR), and Boccio. The 200 Medley relay team of Reade, Alexis Rzempoluch (SR), Hendrickson and Jen Barnola (SO) finished in fourth place.
Marissa Boccio won the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke for the Lady Dalers. Sarah Hendrickson easily won the diving event and finished first in the 50 Freestyle, followed closely by Anesta, who finished third.
Strong swims by Reade and Alexandra Pyros (SR) in the 200 Freestyle; Pye and Julie Littell (SR) in the 200 IM; Barnola in the 50 Freestyle; Rzempoluch and Littell in the 100 Fly; Anesta, Pye and Barnola in the 100 Freestyle; Pyros, Danielle Flatherty (FR) and Cindy Burhans (SO) in the 500 Freestyle; and Lindsay Gelbach (JR), and Reade in the 100 Backstroke rounded out the scoring.
The Dalers next meet was against Conference II rival Oceanside. The Dalers prevailed 106 – 77. The highlights of the meet included first place finishes by the 200 Medley relay team of Lindsay Gehlbach (JR), Rzempoluch, Hendrickson and Anesta and a victory by the 200 Freestyle relay team of Hendrickson, Anesta, Pye and Boccio.
Marissa Boccio was a dual winner in the 50 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle. Sarah Hendrickson was also a dual winner in Diving and the 100 Butterfly. Another first place finish was turned in by Nora Reade in the 100 Freestyle.
Strong performances were turned in by Flaherty, Victoria Russo (FR) and Courtney Sack (FR) in the 200 Freestyle; Pyros, Littell and Leah Fishman (SR) in the 200 Individual Medley; Anesta and Rozina Portelli (SR) in the 50 Freestyle; Littell and Jenna Grasso (SR) in the Fly; Barnola in the 100 Freestyle; Pyros in the 500 Freestyle; Gehlbach in the 100 Backstroke; Rzempoluch and Lauren Connors (SR) in the Breaststroke.
The Dalers will continue their season with an away meet on Wednesday, Sept. 30 against Conference II rival Plainview, a home meet against powerhouse Bellmore-Merrick on Friday, Oct. 2 and against arch rival Massapequa on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Come down to the pool and support your Lady Dalers!
