Recently, the Long Island Riding for the Handicapped Association, Inc. (LIRHA) held its Annual Walk-a-Thon at Jones Beach in memory of New Hyde Park resident Jack Garofalo, Jr. He was a longtime worker in AHRC’s Vocational Training Center, a resident of AHRC Nassau and a student of the LIRHA program.
The Garofalo family, staunch supporters of AHRC and LIRHA and friends of Jack, Jr., walked in celebration of his life while raising needed funds for LIRHA’s program.
The Walk-a-thon benefits the LIRHA program which provides therapy on horseback that is cost-free to the students. The fundraiser is used to lease horses for lessons, insurance fees and accreditation fees. It also purchases special adaptive equipment for the students as well as a nominal salary for the instructors and therapists.
AHRC Nassau is the third largest provider in New York State and Long Island’s premier provider meeting the needs of children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.
AHRC provides community-based programs and services, as well as guidance and support for families.
