I am elated and wish to inform you and the Levittown Tribune and friends and neighbors that your report published Dec. 3, 2004 regarding the dangerous intersection of Wantagh Avenue at Miller Place/Cotton Lane in Levittown has finally come to fruition.
On Oct. 4, Nassau County started the process to install the left-turn lanes on Wantagh Avenue for the safety of our drivers and community as a whole.
Nassau County Public Works Commissioner Ray Ribeiro has told me that the left-turn lanes will be traffic light controlled whereby the turn signal (green arrow) will be activated upon the vehicle entering the turn lane. This in turn will trip the main roadway traffic lights to red allowing safe passage for the vehicle turning into Miller Place or Cotton Lane.
At all other times vehicles will be controlled at the intersection in the usual manner.
I personally wish to thank the more than 600 neighbors who graciously took the time to read and sign the petition dated July 21, 2004 for this much-needed traffic safety device for our community.
I would also like to thank County Legislator Dave Mejias for his backing and County Executive Tom Suozzi for his approval and Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes for his backing and quick action upon notice to alleviate vehicle hazards identified on Miller Place and Cotton Lane, both town roads.
