Weather Doesn’t Slow 5K Race

14:43! Chris Mammone Shatters Record in Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor’s 5K Run

Notwithstanding the threatening weather on Oct. 17, the opening event of the Oyster Festival, the Supervisor’s 5K race attracted over 700 entrants and almost 600 finishers.

The clock tells the winner’s story with – a 14 minute, 43 second finish by Chris Mammone of the Bellmore Striders that shattered his own USA Track & Field -Long Island record of 14:57 and got him to the finish line at Oyster Bay’s Townsend Square 29 seconds in front of Dan McGrath, in the 26th annual Oyster Bay Town Supervisor’s Oyster Festival 5 Kilometer Run on October 17th.

Erin Silverberg-Grey of Levittown reprised her win in the Bethpage Day 5K on Oct. 3, with a strong 18:15 to win the women’s division of the Oyster Bay 5K , with 2008 Oyster Bay winner Noni Accetturi of Syosset a strong second. Top Masters finishers were Robis DeGirmenci and Susan Haywood.

Top local finishers included Nicole Gianetti and Danielle Gianetti of Oyster Bay, who finished 1-2 in the women’s 14 and under age group; Quinn McQuade of Oyster Bay, who scored third in the men’s 14 and under age group; Danielle Hermann of Oyster Bay, third place woman in the 15-19 age group; Matthew Larose of East Norwich, third among the men in the 15-19 age group; Amanda Edell of Oyster Bay, who won top honors in the women’s 20-24 age group; Zach Smith of Oyster Bay and Eric Koch of Locust Valley, who scored 3rd and 5th respectively in the men’s 20-24 age group; Paige Patterson of Oyster Bay, third woman in the 25-29 age group; Allison Rogers of Oyster Bay, fifth in that same 25-29 age group; Fran De Angelis of Bayville, 4th place finisher among the women in the 35-39 age group; Kelly Pickard of Oyster Bay, who celebrated her 50th birthday by taking first place in the women’s 50-54 age group; Mark Fellon of Bayville, 5th place award winner in the men’s 50-54 age group; Dorothy Whalen of Oyster Bay, 4th in the women’s 55-59 age group; Joanne Gallo of Oyster Bay, who earned top honors among the women in the 60-64 age group; and Melinda Ehrlich of East Norwich, who scored 3rd in that age group; Nina Jennings of Mill Neck, who was the oldest female finisher in the race and took first place in the 75-79 age group; Bernadette Winnubst and Kendra Frankein of Locust Valley, who scored 1-2 in the Athena 140-159 Weight Division; and Matthew Janke of East Norwich, who scored 3rd in the Clydesdale 200 pound Weight Division.

The Run was hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay and its Parks Department, with Recreation Supervisor Diane Blanchard and her staff taking the lead, and race management services provided by the Greater Long Island Running Club under the direction of Club President Mike Polansky.

Thanks go to Bob Cook and the Runner’s Edge, who sponsored the $500 “winner take all” prize to the first runner to cross the finish line. Thanks also go to Allan and Marc Sobel of South Shore Outdoor for this event every year – the sweatshirts were well done and are sure to be collectors items.
