Division Avenue HS Cross Country Making Strides in 2009

Coming off an inaugural campaign last season, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams have made great progress this season as they raced against some of the premier cross country programs teams in Nassau County.

Seniors Nick Turk, Conner McCauley, Chris Metzger, and Keith Kerwin led the Blue Dragons. Rounding out the team are James Connelly, Zurial Loman, Juan Diaz, Jon Reyes, John Calzadilla and Jimmy Taggart. Jennifer Addamo, Jennifer Sandoval, Andrea Wolf and Caitlin Hughes filled out the girl’s team. The boys and girls squads have practiced hard all season and put forth an effort that paid off this season and will do so in the future. The team’s lack of experience in running the 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) races was compensated by their determination and cohesive team spirit.

The team competed in various invitational races at the Sunken Meadow State Park, which is famous for its “cardiac hill” and treacherous terrain. In these races, Division squared off against some of the best runners in the state. In the conference races held at Bethpage State Park, the runners competed against some of the elite programs in the county such as Wantagh, Mepham, and Calhoun high schools. Early setbacks with injuries have been overcome and the team is poised to continue its winning ways. Division managed victories over teams from New Hyde Park, Elmont, Wheatley and Carey high schools.

The team enjoyed a memorable season as they continue to run hard, representing Levittown and dedicating themselves to success. Mr. Reynolds, a business teacher at Division Avenue High School, coaches the team.
