Village Board Notes – November 27, 2009

The following are trustee reports from the Nov. 17 Floral Park village board meeting.

Department of Public Works

Trustee Tweedy thanked residents for picking up leaves on their property, bagging them and putting them out for sanitation to pick up on yard waste days.  “It has been a great help,” Trustee Tweedy said. “Please do not rake leaves into the street as it can cause catch basins to back up and flood in the event of heavy rains.”

The Department of Public Works is responsible for sweeping 37 miles of roadway in the village and each street is scheduled to be swept once a week. In business areas, around churches and the Long Island Rail Road Station, sweepers are out very early before cars arrive. Public Works asks residents and business owners for their cooperation and assistance in keeping the streets clean by not sweeping dirt or grass cutting into the street, and to remember that everyone shares the responsibility for a clean village. Be sure to deposit litter in the receptacles provided throughout the business areas. There are currently 75 receptacles throughout the village.

Winter is quickly approaching and Trustee Tweedy brought up several reminders about snow removal. “During a snowstorm, please clear fire hydrants in front of your property of snow in case there is an emergency,” Trustee Tweedy said. “When clearing snow from sidewalks and driveway aprons, please throw the snow to the right as it helps prevent plows from blocking your driveway. Be sure sidewalks are cleared of snow 12 hours after the storm ends. If there is an icy condition on the sidewalk, it should be covered with sand or some other substance to prevent a person from falling. There is a pile of sand in the parking lot opposite the Recreation Center which is available to residents for their use during the winter.”

On motion by Trustee Rhatigan, seconded by Trustee Tweedy and carried unanimously, Mayor Greene recessed the meeting at 8:50 p.m.
