Recently, Holy Spirit had two Division Champions in the CYO of Nassau/Suffolk Fall Soccer League. In the final game of the play-offs the undefeated Holy Spirit fourth grade boys team won over Saint Aidan of Williston Park by a score of 5 to 0 to capture the Division Champion award for the Fourth Grade Boys League
Holy Spirit’s fifth grade girls team was struggling to capture a play-off spot with a record of two wins, three loses, and a tie as the month of October came to a close. The girls finished strongly with two wins and two ties in the final four games of the regular season and finished in second place.
Then off to the play-offs. In the game versus Saint Aidan-2 the score ended in a zero to zero tie after sixty minutes of regulation play. On a penalty kick early in the fifteen minute overtime period Maggie Donnelly scored the only goal of the game to give Holy Spirit a 1 to 0 win.
Sunday’s final game was another defensive battle this time against Saint Aidan-1. After the close of sixty minutes of regulation play and one fifteen minute overtime the score was still tied at zero to zero. Then came a very dramatic shoot out between the two teams. Holy Spirit had practiced for this the prior Wednesday and had their list of five shooters ready to go. Holy Spirit had Katie Abramo in goal. Saint Aidan shot first and then Holy Spirit as the teams alternated shooters. Saint Aidan made two of their first four shots. Holy Spirit was successful with every shot taken from the penalty line. Maggie scored first for Holy Spirit, then Giselle Correia, and then Kaitlyn Milinic. After Keitha Varela was successful on shot number four, the shoot out was terminated as Saint Aidan could not catch up. The final score was 4 to 2.
