Letter: Request to Help Those in Need This Holiday Season

The Social Service Volunteers of Nassau Inc. is a not-for-profit, charitable organization as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The volunteers work in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Social Services to provide assistance for families and children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Incorporated in 1983, the Social Service Volunteers has developed several programs to help people in need during the holiday season. We invite you to join with us to assist these families obtain essential household equipment, clothing and food. Your efforts will meet their needs and make this holiday season a special one for many of our less fortunate neighbors.

Toy Distribution Program

This program provides gifts and toys to over 1,500 children. Schools, businesses, private organizations and individuals participate by donating thousands of gifts and many also volunteer to sort, package and deliver the toys to children in need throughout Nassau County.

Holiday Party for Foster Children

Entertainment, music, refreshments and a visit from Santa make the Holiday Party for Foster Children a truly special occasion for children who have known abuse or neglect in the past. In 2008, over 600 people attended the event. Volunteers assist in the preparation (sorting and wrapping gifts) and on the day of the party (welcoming guests and distributing presents).

Adopt a Family Program

This program allows you to make a difference in the lives of a single family in extreme need. You receive a family description and a list of specific needs. Donors often provide gifts of warm clothing, toys, household and other personal items. Volunteers assist by matching potential donors to families in need, gathering donations and making deliveries to the recipient families.

Thank you for considering these programs. With help, many families in need will experience a joyful holiday. If you would like to help, if you have any questions, or have any other ideas that may benefit families and children, please call the Volunteer Services Office at 227-7415.
