Long Island Choral Society Presents Handel’s Messiah!
At 8 p.m. in Garden City’s Cathedral of the Incarnation, the Long Island Choral Society will continue it’s 81st Season with a concert featuring a performance of the Advent and Christmas portions of George Frederick Handel’s great oratorio, “Messiah.” This event will continue the Society’s unbroken series of yearly “Messiah” performances begun in 1929. The concert will also include selections from Benjamin Britten’s popular work “A Ceremony of Carols.” Beginning the concert will be a solo performance by our Artist-in Residence, Karen Hansen-Gellert on the Double Bass.
The featured soloists are Soprano Michèle Eaton, Mezzo-Soprano Hai-Ting Chinn, Tenor Douglas Perry and Baritone David McFerrin. “Messiah” has become the most familiar of Handel’s many compositions and annually draws an overflow audience to the Cathedral. To be sure of seating, some people arrive as much as an hour before the performance begins.
Proud of its unique existence as the oldest continuously performing musical group on Long Island with a reputation for singing the finest works of choral music in performances of the highest caliber, The Long Island Choral Society was founded in 1929 by Dr. Maurice Garabrant, organist of the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. In 1979, Meredith Elaine Baker became the fourth conductor of this all-volunteer choir of more than 60 singers, both amateur and professional, who come from more than 40 communities in the metropolitan area. Individual advance sale concert tickets as well as season ticket subscriptions are available through their website, www.lics.org, or by calling 594-2926. Tickets are also available at the door on the day of the performance.
